Stephen James' powerful oils have been exhibited widely in Australian galleries. His work is primarily figurative with influences from the German and Australian impressionism. His painting often explores mythical themes in a contemporary context. His portraits of author Amanda Lohrey and the Director of the Brandenburg Orchestras hang in the grand stairwell of The Hughenden.
